DOH readies 'scare' ads to discourage firecracker use MANILA, Philippines - With just a week to go before the New Year, health authorities will bring out the yearly "scare ads" to discourage people from using firecrackers to ring in 2009. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the ads would show gruesome images of mangled body parts resulting from firecracker-related accidents. "Magpapakita tayo ng pliers, lagari, para sa taong matitigas ang ulo (We'll show pliers and saws used to treat injuries. This will be for hardheaded revelers)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio. Earlier, dzBB radio reported that the DOH already put up posters discouraging firecracker use in government hospitals. The posters showed gruesome images of body parts sustaining firecracker-related injuries. Duque said they plan to intensify the campaign as the New Year draws closer. For those injured by fireworks this early, he advised the public to wash firecracker-related wounds with clean running water and soap. Meanwhile, Duque said the melamine scare that hit the country earlier this year is not likely to make a comeback in 2009. The melamine scare stemmed from China's advisory that melamine was present in some milk products made by Chinese firms. "Palagay ko hindi na. Ang Tsina mismo gumawa ng hakbangin para mawala na ang problemang ito (I don't think it will come back.
